You can then customise these skills further by upgrading different attributes as you level up. But you can also select classes that are better tailored to stealth or hacking if that better matches your style. You can pick between one of three classes of soldier, and I found that the marine class best suited my skills, or lack of. I should also stress that full controller support from the offset is a blessing! If like me you’re predominantly a console gamer, it makes picking up and playing for the first time so much easier.īut that isn’t to say there’s a lack of depth, as there’s a hefty RPG element involved too. You might not have the agility of Doomguy, but they’ve managed to transpose the fluidity of the gameplay very impressively. Naturally everything is turn-based, yet there’s a real emphasis on action over tactics, which might not work for roguelike purists, but for someone like me who hasn’t played too many games like this, it’s very accessible and a lot of fun. The Kickstarter page calls it “a modern turn-based sci-fi roguelike with modern 3D graphics.” The project has a few days left, and they’re about $20,000 shy of their donation goal. ![]() Jupiter Hell is ChaosForge’s spiritual successor to DoomRL. “Originally,” he said, “I was going to do it at the end of the Jupiter Hell Kickstarter, as a thank you to the fans, but with the need to respond to ZeniMax’s letter I’ve had to move that forwards.” Kisielewicz told Polygon that this was always the plan, but ZeniMax’s order forced him to make the changes earlier than intended. DoomRL is now just DRL, and all Doom branding has been removed from the game. Many feared Doom the Roguelike would be shut down for good. But the fan-made game is still available online, albeit with a few changes. So… Zenimax have just written to me demanding I take down the DoomRL site… :-/ /tXAwdq59Zz ![]() It cites ChaosForge’s “unauthorized use of ZeniMax’s intellectual property” as reason for the letter. Kisielewicz shared the letter earlier on Twitter at the end of last week. Instead of taking it down, co-creator Kornel Kisielewicz turned the game open-source. This order instructed producer ChaosForge to remove the free downloadable game to prevent further legal action. Earlier this week, ZeniMax Medi hit DoomRL, a popular roguelike version of the original first-person shooter, with a cease-and-desist order.
